Ok, this has puzzled me since joining...
There are lots of posts in the water cooler from pilots with Delta Pilot ID's, are the forums the same on the AFV and DVA websites? That seems logical to me as there seems to be more US based posts than european.
If the 2 sites share a forum, what else is common between the two, I know the Flight Academy isn't; much to my dissapointment as I'm sure there is some interesting and relevant back ground reading there for me.
I also know the logins aren't common as I cant log into DVA to try and track down the Flight Academy library either.

The temptation of a locked door...I want to know what's ont he other side.

(Curious) Dave...
I wonder what this button does...

We are working on making the flight academy available to AFV pilots and would like to have it up and running in a couple of months; however, don't hold me to that statement, there is still a lot of figuring that needs to be done.

Basically, everything between AFV and DVA is exactly the same, with exception to the previously stated, the web site skins, and some of the online events (we can choose who participates in them). Believe me, you aren't missing anything by being on this side as opposed to the other side of the pond. The only difference being they have about 7000 pilots with 2500 active, while we have about 700 pilots with 50 active, AFV can give more of a personal service since we are still a tight knit family. If your saying, "How does Steve know this stuff?," I encourage you to search for DVA3079; I think you'll find a strong common name between the two. There is a reason why I am on this side of the pond now.

Curious Dave,

Your questions are certainly valid; there is much intrigue if you look at the web sites for AFV and DVA, so I'll give you some historical insight. DVA opened (circa) 2001 with a few handfuls of pilots. In the early stages of development the web site was very "primitive" compared to what you see now. Over the years it's grown exponentially in size and support, as well as technologically, and is considered to be among the best organized and very highly respected virtual airlines in the community. On the real world side, Delta and Air France, both belonging to the SkyTeam alliance, have had a special realtionship surrounding their operations, a relationship that ran more intimately than by mere membership of SkyTeam. In 2004 Delta Virtual leadership began entertaining the idea of creating another virtual airline - European based - that would complement DVA and model the partership between Delta and Air France. AFVA was born and a team was selected to make this idea a reality. AFVA opened its doors in mid-2004 and mirrored DVA in website appearance as well as shared resources, such as the Water Cooler. Since then the website has undergone extensive overhaul and continues to be upgraded constantly. Currently, although the appearance of the website interface remains the same, the two virtual airlines are very different, and still very much the same. Growth within the two organizations have provided the ability of each of our teams to adopt different policies and directives, as well as differing ideology in daily operations. This in iteself is a corporate demarcation line, and rightly so as we mimic different companies, but still complement one another in a special way. We, AFVA, share several common resources with DVA, including the Water Cooler, access to data such as charts and oceanic tracks, ACARS (even though we both have different splash screens), and common, somewhat centralized fleet and document libraries, and also the Online Events Calendar. Of course, we also share Luke, our Founding Father and Lord of Web Creation and Development!

Strictly speaking of AFVA, this VA has also undergone significant internal changes that do not explicitly involve DVA. There have been several management and leadership turnovers as well as a large number of pilots who have come and gone. In the past 4 1/2 years that we've been operating, AFVA has developed its own unique "flavor", if you will, that has set it apart from all the rest. We are a member of the Global Virtual Airlines Group, which encompasses both AFVA and DVA, and we have our own sets of guidelines and operating standards unique only to AFVA. Additionally, AFVA offers a different fleet and route structure that DVA pilots are welcome to enjoy, and DVA also provides the same for us. This is where that complementary relationship comes in. Many AFVA members, and most of the staff, got their start with DVA, myself included, and have been a member of the AFVA family ever since.

With regards to the Flight Academy, yes, there is something in the works to open this up to AFVA members. This is still in the very early planning stages so I won't say much more about it, but it will make a fantastic ammenity for our people to enjoy. Hopefull you've found this both interesting and helpful to understand where we started from. If you have any more of these kinds of questions, feel free to post!

Ryan and Steve

Thanks for the info, I guess I shall have to be patient and wait until the Flight Academy plans are closer to fruition...

Keep up the stirling work guys
