To all pilots that are rated for the 747 but not currently in the program:

If you are flying on VATSIM with the 747 and are authorised by ATC to exceed 250KIAS below 10,000, please put in your pirep comments-clean speed eg 260KIAS -this will prevent your pirep from being put on hold by the reviewer for excess speed below 10,000.

The 747 is routinely authorised to fly above this speed when heavy, for operational reasons, to allow the flaps to be fully up, otherwise you would have to fly flaps 5 until 10,000, and have the stickshaker going off because you're close to the stall speed, or the other case is that pilots will exceed the 250 rule and suffer the wrath of the VATSIM controller or get their pirep held for excess speed. Please ensure VATSIM ATC give you permission to do this, especially in your longer flights on VATSIM with the 747. Happy flying!

Mark,

I just had a 13 hour "Offline" Flight rejected because I went to clean speed under 10k. I even put it in my remarks. Please clarify whether or not this is allowed for offline flights as well.

I will email the staff member concerned or get senior staff to approve your flight for operational reasons-please bear with us-we are currently reviewing operating the 747 offline above 250KIAS below 10,000 ft-I do realise many pilots use FS passengers,etc-and "ATC" advise you to exceed 250KIAS below 10,000-as soon as I have an answer from senior staff, I will post a forum article about it-in the meantime, try to fly flaps 5, below 250 kIAS until this issue is resolved. By the way, congrats on your promotion to the right seat of Concorde-you'll enjoy her-so nice to do 4hrs JFK-EGLL for instance!

Mark,

I appreciate the quick response. What I am looking for and can't speak for others is continuity in how Pireps are approved/held/rejected. It's seems as though there isn't some sort of baseline to follow when these situations occur and it's up to the discretion of the reviewer.

I will definitely keep her under 250 from now on until their's further discussion on this matter.

Thank You

Justin Gee

Staff do have guidelines on approving pireps, but these guidelines don't always extend to certain aircraft rw operating requirements-we are trying to improve these guidelines but this will take time. I for instance wasn't an expert in the 747 before I became 747CP but got myself up to speed with her-eg I've got a 900 page proper Boeing Operations Manual for the 747-a lot of staff are not rw aviators etc so may not be 100% knowledgable, myself included, but all of us are trying to improve our knowledge of aviation and its operation, so I apologise if any staff member holds a pirep for what would be rw accepted practice for operational reasons.

Justin - We do have a set of guidelines to follow for approving PIREPS. We are reviewing them internally to ensure that we cover all aspects :). I have updated the title to include the fact that this applies to all flights whether on VATSIM or not.
