KLM Royal Dutch Airlines on 19JAN12 announced major changes to its South-East Asia operation. From 25MAR12, the airline is splitting operation to Thailand and Taiwan. Amsterdam – Bangkok – Taipei service will be split to Amsterdam – Bangkok vv and Amsterdam – Taipei – Manila vv. Manila service will be operating via Taipei instead of nonstop flight.
Bangkok service is to be operated by both Boeing 777-200ER and -300ER and Taipei/Manila is operated by Boeing 777-200ER (it does not have local traffic rights on Taipei – Manila sector). The service adjustment marks a new milestone for KLM’s Taiwan operation, where it’ll be operating nonstop flight for the first time in 29 years. It will also be the first European carrier to operate as nonstop flight to the capital of Taiwan, since AIRFRANCE terminated Paris CDG –
Taipei nonstop flight in mid-1990s.
Below is quick reference information for KLM’s Taipei service.
Milestones
24APR83: Inaugural flight of KLM service to Taipei as KL809/810. Initially it started with 1 weekly (Day 6 from AMS, Day 7 from TPE) Boeing 747 COMBI operation on Amsterdam – Vienna – Dubai – Bangkok – Taipei
routing. Note KL809/810 in 30OCT83 was replaced by KL881/882. KLM was the first European carrier to offer passenger service to Taiwan
25MAR84: At the launch of Summer 1984 schedule, KLM launched 2nd weekly service as KL889/890, departing Day 3 from AMS, Day 4 from TPE with same routing
31MAR85: Introduction of 3 weekly service, operating as Amsterdam – Athens – Dubai – Bangkok – Taipei, flight number KL877/878. This flight number would then be used for both Bangkok and Taipei until 24MAR12
30MAY86: Introduction of 4 weekly service, also operate as Amsterdam – Athens – Dubai – Bangkok – Taipei, flight number KL875/876. KL875/876 was used until 31AUG89, and will be re-activated for Bangkok flight from 25MAR12
01SEP86: KLM obtained local traffic rights on Bangkok – Taipei sector
26OCT86: Elimination of Athens stopover for KL877/878, its 1 of 4 weekly services. Operational routing: Amsterdam – Dubai – Bangkok – Taipei
01JAN89: 2nd weekly service, KL875/876, also saw the elimination of Athens stopover (Athens stopover briefly operated again from 26MAY89 to 31AUG89). KL875/876 replaced by KL877/878 from 01SEP89
26MAR90: Introduction of overall 5 weekly service, flight number KL877/878, which saw frequency increased from 2 to 3 for this particular flight
01APR91: At the launch of summer 1991 season, KLM eliminated Vienna and Dubai stops, which then became Amsterdam – Bangkok – Taipei. This operational pattern is in effect until 24MAR12
01JUL93: Introduction of Boeing 747-400COMBI service, replacing -200/-300COMBI
31OCT93: Introduction of “World Business Class”, which replaced previous First and Business Class seats and services
1995: Taipei service is transferred to new subsidiary, KLM Asia, in order to maintain operation to both China and Taiwan
27OCT96: Introduction of 6 weekly frequency
18JUN97: Service increased to Daily, after 14 years of operation
Jun 2003 ~ Feb 2004: Market downturn due to SARS epidemic, forced the airline to cut its frequencies to 4 weekly in June 2003; 6 weekly Aug – Oct 2003; 5 weekly Oct 2003 – Dec 2003; 6 weekly Jan 2004 – Feb 2004. (It should be noted that flight reduction may have already been in effect from April 2003, the height of SARS epidemic in Asia)
25MAR12: Amsterdam – Bangkok – Taipei, a routing which KLM operated since 01APR91, will split to Amsterdam – Bangkok vv and Amsterdam – Taipei vv. Taipei service extends to Manila with no local traffic rights. This also marks the end of Boeing 747 passenger service to both Thailand and Taiwan.
